The Fogg Behavior Model, developed by BJ Fogg at Stanford's Behavior Design Lab and introduced to a wide audience through his 2019 book Tiny Habits, reduces the mystery of why behavior does or doesn't happen to one compact equation: B = MAP. A behavior happens when Motivation, Ability, and a Prompt converge at the same moment. Motivation is the least reliable of the three levers. It's wave-shaped: high after the documentary, gone by Thursday. Any behavior design that depends on sustained motivation is built on the one component guaranteed to fluctuate. The dependable levers are the other two: make the behavior radically easier (Ability) and attach it to a reliable trigger (Prompt).
Hence the Tiny Habits method: shrink the desired behavior to something almost laughably small (two push-ups, flossing one tooth, one sentence in the journal), anchor it to an existing routine ("After I pour my coffee, I will..."), and immediately celebrate. The celebration is a deliberate moment of positive emotion. Fogg's central claim is that emotion, not repetition alone, is what wires habits. This is the most distinctive and most debated element of the framework.
Fogg builds the method on a small, precise toolkit. The anchor-behavior-celebration recipe is the unit of habit design. Behaviors scale down until reliability is trivially achievable; the habit grows itself once it is rooted. Failed habits are troubleshot mechanically rather than morally: a missed habit means the prompt failed, the behavior was too big, or the anchor was wrong. It never means the person is undisciplined.
Fogg also separates aspirations from behaviors sharply. "Get healthy" is an aspiration. Only specific behaviors can be designed. A coach or client who conflates the two will pick a behavior that's really an aspiration under a thinner disguise ("exercise more"), and the design will fail the same way every time.
For stopping unwanted behavior, the model inverts: remove the prompt, increase the difficulty, or dampen the motivation. The most durable strategy is usually removing the prompt, since without the trigger the behavior rarely fires even when motivation is present.
Behavior design shows up wherever coaching meets follow-through. In accountability work, it replaces the shame spiral of "I know what to do and I don't do it, so something's wrong with me" with a design problem that has known failure modes. In health and energy coaching it's the delivery mechanism for nearly everything: the clinician prescribes the what, and B = MAP supplies the how. Between-session commitments, the ones coaches assign at the end of sessions and clients forget by Wednesday, live or die on exactly these mechanics.
A coach trained in the method doesn't just ask what a client will do. They help the client identify which existing routine to anchor to, how small to shrink the behavior so it can't fail, and what the celebration will look and feel like. That specificity is the difference between a commitment that survives the week and one that doesn't.
The model's standing is good and worth stating carefully. Its components rest on established behavioral science: prompt and trigger research, the intention-action gap, and the well-documented unreliability of motivation as a sustained driver. Its close academic cousin, implementation intentions ("when X, I will Y," developed by Peter Gollwitzer), carries strong meta-analytic support across health behavior, academic achievement, and goal pursuit.
The specific Tiny Habits package, including the celebration mechanism, is supported more by Fogg's lab work, large-scale program data, and practitioner results than by independent randomized trials. "Emotions create habits" is a useful design principle stated with more confidence than the underlying science fully settles. Repetition and context stability also matter; habit researchers debate the relative weights. The fair summary is that the method is evidence-informed, built on a solid behavioral science foundation, and unusually honest about its own scope. Fogg is explicit: behavior design solves the doing problem, not the wanting problem.
It solves doing, not wanting. The method is designed for the gap between intention and action, not for the prior question of whether the intention is worth having. Applied to the wrong layer, it efficiently delivers a habit the person didn't actually want.
The celebration mechanism is not fully settled. Theoretically coherent and practically useful, but its status as a validated causal mechanism is still open. Coaches should describe it as a powerful design heuristic rather than an established law.
Tiny can resist growing. The system is better at starting and rooting behaviors than at prescribing how they should scale. Where growth toward an ambitious goal is the real work, coaches often need an explicit progression framework alongside it.
If a coach uses Tiny Habits or the Fogg Behavior Model, they have a practical, research-informed framework for diagnosing why behavior doesn't happen and designing it to happen more reliably. The core move is reframing failed follow-through from a character problem to a design problem: the prompt wasn't reliable, the behavior was too large, or the motivation was absent at the trigger moment. All three are fixable. None require more willpower.
In practice, this shows up as much more specific between-session commitments. A coach trained in behavior design doesn't just ask what you'll do; they help you design when (anchored to an existing routine), how small (tiny enough to almost certainly happen), and how you'll feel about doing it (a deliberate celebration to wire the habit). That specificity is the difference between a commitment you'll remember and one you'll forget by Friday.
The method is not a substitute for clarity about what's worth doing. BJ Fogg is explicit: Tiny Habits solves the doing problem, not the wanting problem. If your challenge is figuring out what matters, or whether a goal is the right one, behavior design is the wrong starting layer. But if you know what you want to do and consistently aren't doing it, that is precisely the problem this framework was built to fix.
WOOP / Mental Contrasting — complementary action-science tool. WOOP identifies the internal obstacle and builds an if-then response to it; Tiny Habits supplies the anchor-behavior-celebration structure that response lives inside. The two pair naturally for clients who need both obstacle identification and habit design.
Self-Determination Theory — upstream motivation layer. SDT addresses the quality of motivation (autonomous vs. controlled) that Tiny Habits takes as given. Together they cover both why someone is motivated and how they can design behavior to work with whatever motivation they have.

Atomic Habits (James Clear, 2018) — the closest parallel framework. Clear's system emphasizes identity-based change alongside habit stacking and environment redesign. Fogg's model is more diagnostic ("what element failed?") and centers emotion as the wiring mechanism; Atomic Habits is more expansive as a life-optimization system and centers identity.
