The Fogg Behavior Model, developed by BJ Fogg at Stanford's Behavior Design Lab and popularized through his book Tiny Habits (2019), reduces the mystery of why behavior does or doesn't happen to one compact equation: B = MAP. A behavior happens when Motivation, Ability, and a Prompt converge at the same moment. If any element is missing (you weren't reminded, it was too hard, you didn't care enough right then), the behavior doesn't happen, no matter how sincere the intention was last Tuesday.
The model's most consequential claim runs against most self-improvement culture: motivation is the least reliable of the three levers. It's wave-shaped, high after the documentary and gone by Thursday. Any behavior design that depends on sustained motivation is therefore built on the one component guaranteed to fluctuate. The dependable levers are the other two: make the behavior radically easier (Ability) and attach it to a reliable trigger (Prompt). Hence the Tiny Habits method: shrink the desired behavior to something almost laughably small (two push-ups, flossing one tooth, one sentence in the journal), anchor it to an existing routine ("After I pour my coffee, I will..."), and immediately celebrate. The celebration is a deliberate moment of positive emotion, because in Fogg's account it's emotion, not repetition, that wires habits.
In practice the method is a small, precise toolkit: the anchor–behavior–celebration recipe as the unit of habit design; scaling behaviors down until reliability is trivially achievable (the habit grows itself once it's rooted); troubleshooting failed habits mechanically rather than morally, since a missed habit means the prompt failed, the behavior was too big, or the anchor was wrong, never that the person is undisciplined; and Fogg's untangling of aspirations from behaviors ("get healthy" is an aspiration; only specific behaviors can be designed). For stopping unwanted behavior, the model inverts: remove the prompt, increase the difficulty, or dampen the motivation.
Behavior design shows up wherever coaching meets follow-through. In accountability work, it replaces the shame spiral of "I know what to do and I don't do it, so something's wrong with me" with an engineering problem that has known failure modes. In health and energy coaching it's the delivery mechanism for nearly everything: the doctor's what becomes an anchored, tiny, celebrated how. And in any engagement, the between-session commitments coaches assign live or die on exactly these mechanics. A coach fluent in B = MAP designs commitments that survive the week instead of testing the client's willpower.
The model's standing is good and worth stating precisely. Its components rest on established behavioral science: prompt/trigger research, the intention-action gap, the well-documented unreliability of motivation. Its close cousin in academic psychology, implementation intentions ("when X, I will Y"), carries strong meta-analytic support. The specific Tiny Habits package, including the celebration mechanism, is supported more by Fogg's lab work, large-scale program data, and practitioner results than by extensive independent randomized trials; "emotions create habits" is a useful design principle stated more confidently than the underlying science strictly settles (repetition and context stability still matter, and habit researchers debate the weights). The fair summary is that the method is evidence-informed and unusually honest about its own scope. Fogg is explicit that behavior design solves the doing problem, not the wanting problem, which is precisely where it hands the work back to coaching.
Every missed habit has a mechanical cause. The prompt failed, the behavior was too big, or the anchor was wrong, and all three are fixable.
B = MAP: a behavior happens when Motivation, Ability, and a Prompt converge in the same moment. If the trigger is absent, the action is too hard, or you don't care enough right then, the behavior doesn't happen regardless of intention. Design work targets Ability and Prompt, because Motivation is the unreliable one.
