Ashridge Executive Education

Ashridge Executive Education traces its origins to 1959, when Ashridge House (a Grade I listed neo-Gothic mansion in Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire) was relaunched as a management training institution under the name Ashridge Management College. The college had roots reaching back to 1921, when Ashridge House was acquired by a trust founded by Bonar Law, and it had served as a residential site for executive and leadership development for decades before management education became its formal mission.

In 2015, Ashridge completed an operational merger with Hult International Business School, becoming Hult Ashridge Executive Education. The coaching function, which had been formalised as the Ashridge Centre for Coaching in 2005, continued operating from the estate under the Hult umbrella, and the coaching qualifications portfolio now trades as Hult Coaching Qualifications at Ashridge. The Centre is directed by Erik de Haan, who holds credentials with the British Psychoanalytic Council alongside EMCC accreditation, and whose research on coaching effectiveness is widely cited in the field. Since 2005, the Centre has published a minimum of ten research papers annually and conducted the largest-scale coaching effectiveness study of its time in 2016.

For coaches, the Ashridge name on a qualification signals a specific orientation: academically rigorous, relationally grounded, and informed by psychodynamic and systemic thinking. This is a school that treats coaching as a practice discipline shaped by ongoing reflective inquiry rather than a transferable skill set.

Coaching Programs

Ashridge's coaching qualifications sit within a structured ladder from postgraduate certificate through to doctoral level. All programs are based at Ashridge House, blending residential learning with supported practice between modules.

Postgraduate Certificate in Executive Coaching

The Certificate is the entry point for practitioners wishing to develop a formally recognised coaching practice. It is available in both face-to-face and online formats, with three intakes per year, making it the most accessible program in the portfolio. It is EMCC programme-accredited, and graduates are eligible for EMCC Individual Accreditation at Practitioner level.

Postgraduate Certificate in Team Coaching

A parallel certificate-level program focused specifically on coaching teams and groups within organisational contexts. It runs once per year, on campus. Entry requirements and EMCC accreditation pathway mirror the Executive Coaching Certificate.

Postgraduate Diploma in Executive Coaching

The Diploma is an assessment-only module for Certificate graduates who wish to achieve formal EMCC Individual Accreditation at Senior Practitioner level. Entry requires the PG Certificate in Executive Coaching (or equivalent), plus a minimum of three years' experience in coaching or consulting roles. Assessment involves a self-evaluation against seven coaching competencies, a 5,500-word case study reviewed by two accreditation board members, a recorded coaching session with transcript and client feedback, and a live 20-minute practicum observed by the board.

Postgraduate Diploma in Team Coaching

The team coaching equivalent of the executive diploma, following a parallel assessment structure for coaches working primarily in group and team contexts.

Master's in Coaching

The Master's is open to experienced practitioners who wish to deepen their theoretical grounding and undertake a qualitative research project under faculty supervision. Two specialisation tracks are available, Executive Coaching and Team Coaching, each running once per year on campus. MSc graduates who want to continue into original research can pursue the Professional Doctorate, making Ashridge one of the few coaching schools in the world to offer a full academic ladder from certificate to doctorate.

Postgraduate Diploma in Organisational Supervision

A supervision qualification for coaches who supervise the practice of other coaches, running once every 18 months on campus. The program is EMCC programme-accredited.

Methodology and Academic Approach

The distinguishing feature of Ashridge coaching programs is their grounding in relational and psychodynamic theory. The underlying premise, expressed explicitly in the Centre's own research, is that coaching is a co-created encounter rather than a practitioner applying tools to a client. This positions Ashridge in clear contrast to competency-checklist approaches and places it closer to the tradition of supervision, therapy research, and depth psychology than to skills-based coach training.

The Centre holds the EMCC Quality Award for its programme accreditation. This means EMCC reviews the programs independently, and graduates automatically receive the European Individual Award (EIA) at Senior Practitioner level on completing the Diploma pathway, with no separate application required. Hult Ashridge has deliberately chosen EMCC accreditation over ICF programme accreditation, reflecting an institutional preference for EMCC's reflective, dialogue-based accreditation model. Teaching hours from Ashridge programs do, however, count toward ICF credential hour requirements for graduates who choose to pursue ICF credentials independently.

Faculty are practitioner-scholars: most hold both significant research credentials and active coaching or supervision practices. The Centre's own meta-analysis of coaching outcomes, published in 2023, was described as the most rigorous in the field to date.

Ashridge in the Coaching Field

Ashridge sits firmly in the academic wing of coach training, alongside institutions such as Henley Business School and institutions offering ICF-accredited master's programs elsewhere in Europe. Its peer group is university-level programs that take practitioners seriously as researchers of their own practice, rather than the short-course certificate market or consumer coaching schools.

The Hult merger has brought the institution into a larger global network, though the coaching programs remain operationally centred at Ashridge House. The Hult umbrella also carries triple accreditation from AACSB, EQUIS, and AMBA, which reinforces the institutional standing of Ashridge qualifications within business education broadly, even though those accreditations apply to Hult's degree programs rather than coaching certificates specifically.

Coaches trained at Ashridge tend to be internal coaches, OD consultants, and leadership development professionals in senior organisational roles, or established independent practitioners working at executive level. The programs are designed to deepen practitioners who are already coaching, not to serve as entry routes into the field.

What This Means for You

If you are considering working with a coach who holds an Ashridge qualification, you can expect someone who has been trained to reflect deeply on the relational dynamics of coaching, well beyond the deployment of techniques. The EMCC Senior Practitioner credential attached to the Diploma pathway represents one of the more demanding accreditation processes in the field, requiring observed live practice, case study analysis, and ongoing supervision. That said, a credential does not guarantee fit: Ashridge-trained coaches tend toward a slower, more exploratory style shaped by psychodynamic and systemic thinking, which suits some clients and contexts considerably better than others. Ask any prospective coach what supervision they currently receive, how they think about the coaching relationship, and what their own development as a practitioner looks like. Those questions will tell you more than the qualification alone.
